America Recycles Promotes Recycling & Reuse

December 2004
Last month, the Environmental Stewardship Program participated in America Recycles 2004, one of the most comprehensive recycling campaigns in the nation. Events centered around America Recycles Day (November 15) promoted the “Three R’s”: reduce, reuse, and recycle. In cooperation with the Student Environmental Advisory Board, the program promoted the use of reusable products by distributing travel mugs at Wescoe Beach on America Recycles Day. The mugs can be used at most coffee shops and soda fountains to reduce the use of disposable cups. The new KU Recycling trailers were on display, and information about recycling on and off campus was available to passers-by. KU Environs also sponsored a recycled art contest and handed out Lawrence Environmental Consumer Guides with tips on making environmentally sound purchases. Later that week, the recycling trailers were parked north of the Student Recreation Fitness Center for students, faculty and staff to drop off recyclables. The Environmental Stewardship Program has plans to provide this recycling service on a regular basis starting next spring.
